Active recreation is regarded as non-competitive physical activity for the purpose of wellbeing and enjoyment. It includes activities that occur in built, landscaped and natural environments, including outdoor recreation, fitness and exercise, community recreation, and aquatics.
Active recreation is a great way to improve all aspects of your hauora by spending time with friends, connection to the land, challenging yourself, and having fun!
Nuku Ora is aspiring to reduce the drop off in activity levels for rangatahi to ensure they get to experience the many benefits associated with regular physical activity. For many rangatahi, sport no longer provides opportunities that capture their interests or meet their needs, therefore active recreation has seen a huge growth in popularity due to its participant-led nature and flexibility to have fun how they want to!
When working with rangatahi it is important to put on a positive youth development lens, which is why Nuku Ora uses the Mana Taiohi framework as a foundation for all work involving rangatahi.
Check out the amazing holistic framework below, and reach out if you need any support implementing these principles when engaging with rangatahi!
The Mana Taiohi Principles
The Mana Taiohi principles acknowledge the mana that young people bring or carry, and actively work to enhance that mana. The framework evolved from the principles of youth development previously expressed in the Youth Development Strategy of Aotearoa (2002), and was informed by young people and people who work with young people, a review of Aotearoa-based literature on positive youth development, and a Te Ao Māori worldview.
