Maraeroa Hauora Expo: A Celebration of Whānau and Wellbeing

In early May 2024, Maraeroa School hosted a vibrant afternoon designed to unite whānau and foster community connections through health and wellness. The event, the Hauora Expo, aimed to introduce families to local hauora organisations and gather valuable input for the school’s health community consultation.

Local organisations, including Well-Fed, Bee Healthy, Healthy Homes, Te Whatu Ora, and our very own Nuku Ora Green Prescription team, participated, offering essential information about their services. Families enjoyed delicious kai and wai, while the school’s play box provided entertainment for tamariki, creating a lively atmosphere.

A highlight of the expo was an interactive activity that engaged whānau in identifying key priorities for the Health and PE curriculum in a fun, playful manner. This innovative approach encouraged open dialogue and collaboration, ensuring everyone’s voices were heard. The afternoon was a resounding success, demonstrating how easily this model can be replicated in other schools.

 

Playful Leadership Development: Unleashing Young Potential

In partnership with Y Central and Wellington City Council, Nuku Ora helped facilitate a Tākaro Youth Leadership morning with 46 of Y Central's enthusiastic young leaders.

Our station focused on teaching these youth leaders some practical models for redirecting or realigning tamariki behaviour during tākaro. We covered everything from free play and understanding our role as adults, to more structured games where participants designed activities using unique equipment. Finally, we introduced the Halberg STEP model, engaging them in a tag game where we frequently paused to modify the space, task, equipment, or people involved.

At Active Families, we believe that play is one of the secret ingredients to raising happy, healthy tamariki and whānau! We create fun-filled opportunities that encourage whānau to come together, learn, laugh and move while supporting each other on their health journeys.
