Kia rau nuku
Kia rau wai
Kia rau ora
It is from this whakataukī that the name Nuku Ora is derived, speaking to the joy and vitality derived from physical activity. Our name embodies the concepts of activity, movement, life, and joy, and outcome that we want to achieve - improve the hauora and wellbeing of individuals, whānau, and communities through increased physical activity.
Nuku Ora is the independent body for physical activity in the wider Wellington region. Established in 1990, we are a charitable trust, with the mission of promoting physical activity as a means to enhance the wellbeing of people and communities.
Spanning from Ōtaki in the west, up to Eketāhuna in the east, and Wellington City in the south, our reach covers eight territorial authority areas within the Greater Wellington Regional Council.
We guide, lead, and facilitate appealing, accessible, and inclusive physical activity initiatives that promote the health and wellbeing of everyone in Te Upoko o te Ika a Māui. We work within communities as trusted advocates for individuals and whānau, dedicated to supporting and empowering everyone in the Wellington, Kāpiti, and Wairarapa regions to realise their hauora aspirations. We do this by ensuring equitable access to physical activity through active recreation, sport, play, and ngā taonga tākaro.
